Do Braces Hurt?

braces

If you are preparing for your orthodontic treatment, the most common question you might ask yourself is “Do braces hurt?” It is normal to feel a little anxious about getting braces, especially when you hear the words “metal” and “tightening” in one sentence. Well, rest assure that any discomfort that you feel throughout your orthodontic treatment is manageable. Dr. Bryan Johnson will take the time to discuss the various treatment options that we offer such as traditional metal braces or clear aligners to make sure you are comfortable and well-informed throughout the entire process.

What To Expect During The First Week

Normally, the whole process of getting braces put on should take around 1 to 2 hours. Dr. Bryan Johnson will clean your teeth and apply a special glue to hold the brackets in place on each individual tooth. A metal archwire will go over the brackets and secured with an elastic band. Our Salem, OR orthodontist will have you come in regularly to make adjustments to the braces to properly move your teeth to its correct position.

The procedure itself is painless, but you may feel some soreness after a few hours of wear. This discomfort should last for about a week at the very most. After a month passes, you will get used to the braces and will most likely not notice that they are there.

How To Ease The Pain

If you are having a difficult time adjusting to the discomfort, we recommend taking over the counter medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen to alleviate the pain. We also suggest a more natural approach by rinsing your mouth with salt water to reduce any swelling and discomfort from the braces. Dr. Johnson will also give you an orthodontic wax that you can put over your brackets, so that it does not rub against the inside of your mouth.
