Metal Braces

Metal Braces

Reliable Salem, OR Orthodontic Treatment

At Bryan Johnson Orthodontics, we offer our patients several treatment choices for aligning their teeth, including ceramic braces, clear aligners, and metal braces. If you believe that metal braces aren’t right for you because you believe that the braces are bulky, big, and uncomfortable to wear, we’ve got some good news for you! Today’s metal braces are smaller, more comfortable and much more attractive than the metal braces used in the past. Metal braces are popular among kids, teens, and adults and are typically the least expensive type of braces. They can be used to treat a wide variety of orthodontic problems concerning the alignment of the teeth and jaws. The only way to find out if metal braces are right for you or your child is to visit an orthodontist for an evaluation.

Our Salem, OR orthodontist, Dr. Johnson, uses modern metal braces made of high-grade stainless steel. These braces have a sleek, low-profile appearance and feature smooth, rounded corners for good comfort. Metal braces consist of brackets that are cemented to the front surface of the teeth, with a thin archwire running through them to apply pressure to the teeth to prompt them to move.

Our Salem Braces Procedure

During your appointment, a cheek retractor may be used to help Dr. Johnson see your teeth to properly put on your metal braces. A conditioner is used on the front surfaces of the teeth to in preparation for the brackets, which are then cleaned off and dried. An adhesive primer is placed on the teeth to enhance the bonding process. Using a cement-like material, your Salem orthodontist will apply this to the back of the brackets and on the primed teeth. Once all the brackets have been placed, the excess cement is removed and a special light is used to harden the cement.

The entire procedure normally takes around an hour to complete. Once your braces are on, you may feel slight discomfort due to the pressure applied to your teeth by the archwire. Don’t worry! This soreness will diminish over the next few days. If the pain becomes a little unbearable, we recommend taking over-the-counter pain to help relieve you of any soreness you feel.

How Long Your Treatment Will Last

While the length of treatment with metal braces is different for every patient, the average treatment time is between 24 and 36 months. Once your braces come off, you will be fitted for a retainer which you must wear to hold your teeth in their new positions.

Maintaining Your Metal Braces

It’s important to take good care of your braces by keeping them clean and not doing anything that can damage them. Maintaining good oral hygiene should be one of your top priorities when you’re wearing braces so you don’t run into any unexpected problems like tooth decay that can throw your treatment off-track. You should carefully brush your braces when you’re brushing your teeth to keep them clean and free of food debris.

One of the biggest adjustments you’ll have to make is getting used to a new diet. For the entire time you’re wearing braces, you’ll need to avoid eating all foods and snacks that can loosen, bend, and break the brackets and wires on your teeth. We’ll give you very specific directions regarding what foods to avoid when we put your braces on. There are plenty of braces-friendly foods you can enjoy so don’t think that you’ll go hungry for the whole time you’re in treatment because you won’t!
